Report from the Muslim Youth Group by Nour Chaaban

For the past few months the MYG Board and General Committee had been working hard on putting together an unforgettable retreat for 2010′s youth group. As it turned out, that is exactly what it was – unforgettable.

The retreat was attended by kids and counselors from Orange County all the way to Northern California, with ages ranging from ten to thirty years old. The camp, itself, located between Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead, was surrounded by breath taking scenery. Fortunately , our youth group was able to have great speakers at this trip including: Dr. Ahmed Soboh , Dr. Maher Hathout , May Alhassan , Reem Salahi , and a very well known hip-hop artist, “Lupe Fiasco” . The youth group engaged in activities including zip line, karaoke, campfires, sports, and workshops that helped them come together and talk about some of the major issues we face as young Muslim Americans.

Overall, the feedback was overwhelming. Some MYG alumni called it “the best retreat” they had attended in the past five years, while the younger kids got a sense of leadership. As for this year’s Board and General Committee, we can proudly say that we have set the tone for other generations to come, have shown incoming youth how important these brother/sister hoods are, and that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

We would like to say that we are extremely thankful for having such a diverse group of youth that take time out of their weekends to join us, we are thankful for the support and donations that we receive from our community members, we are really thankful for the time and effort that Nathan Richardson and Jihad Turk put into this every Sunday, and last but not least we are thankful to be surrounded by young Muslims who we can relate to and young Muslims who strive to attain Allah’s (SWT) happiness.
