Hassan Hathout Legacy Foundation Annual Essay Contest

Dr. Hassan Hathout (1924-2009) was a man of God, a man of science, and a man of love.  Love in God was a crucial part of his mission.  For Hassan Hathout, all people regardless of faith were divided into two categories, those with a loving heart and those with a hating heart.  The spirit of love is vibrant in all Abrahamic faiths.  As a Muslim, Hassan Hathout believed that love is the backbone of Islamic faith, and that the mission statement of Islam is summarized in God’s words to the prophet “We have sent you for nothing but mercy to the worlds”. You can read more about Hassan Hathout at


Inspired by Hassan Hathout’s personality and way of life, the Hassan Hathout Legacy Foundation is announcing an essay contest for students in 5th through 8th grades (or age 10 through 13 years). For first-time participants, the title of the essay is:  “How to Grow a Loving Heart.” 

Students who submitted essays in previous years about the above-mentioned topic can participate by writing about “How Learning is an Islamic Duty.”

Content may include excerpts from the Quran, sayings of the prophets, and writings of Hassan Hathout or other religious scholars.  Two to three pages are required.


Participating students or teachers must provide the student’s name, grade, email address, postal address, school name and location, teacher’s name and information is optional.  The contact information should be typed as a cover page stapled to each student’s essay.  Final submissions should be mailed to: The Hassan Hathout Legacy Foundation, P.O.Box 609, South Pasadena, California 91031, and postmarked on or before December 1st, 2012.  All participants will receive certificates and honorable mention.  Top contestants will each receive a medal and a monetary gift of $ 200.00.
